Rolls-Royce Submarines designs, supplies and supports the Nuclear Steam Raising Plants that power all of the UK Royal Navy’s nuclear submarines. This work covers the full lifecycle of the propulsion plant, from initial design and safety substantiation through to frontline support across the world.

The organisation provides equipment and technical expertise from its Operations Centre in Derby, with additional support at Barrow-in-Furness, Devonport and Faslane, and specialist teams in Glasgow, Cardiff and a unique test facility in Caithness. Their engineers work on reactor cores, major vessels, primary systems equipment, electronic control systems, and key elements of the secondary systems including turbo-generators and propulsors.

This specialist capability is entirely separate from the Rolls-Royce SMR business.

Rolls-Royce Submarines is responsible for delivering the Nuclear Steam Raising Plants (NSRP) and elements of the secondary propulsion systems to the UK Ministry of Defence, managing these assets across their full lifecycle.

This includes frontline support for Royal Navy submarine reactor plant equipment from their Operations Centre in Derby, as well as support at Barrow-in-Furness shipyard and at the naval bases in Devonport and Faslane. Technical specialists are also based in Glasgow and Cardiff, with a unique test facility in Caithness, Scotland.

To deliver this capability, Rolls-Royce employs world-class engineers from a range of backgrounds, alongside highly skilled functional teams. Their engineers design and substantiate the safety of the NSRP, including reactor cores, primary systems pipework and valves, major vessels and electronic control systems — while also supporting parts of the secondary equipment such as turbo-generators and propulsors.

Graduates joining Rolls-Royce Submarines can expect to work within one of the UK’s most advanced engineering environments, contributing to the design, safety and support of the Nuclear Steam Raising Plants used in Royal Navy submarines.
