Nuclear Graduates - Hints & Tips
Thinking about applying to the Nuclear Graduates programme? Whether you’ve just discovered us or are already halfway through your application, this page is here to help you give it your best shot.
Below are some helpful hints, straight from our team, to help you feel confident at every stage, from choosing the right role to writing a great CV and answering the application questions.
Finding the Right Role
This is your first (and possibly most important!) step, choosing the opportunity that best suits you.-
Do your research
You don’t need to become an expert in the nuclear sector overnight, but reading through our website and checking out a few recent news articles will help you feel more confident and informed.
-
Explore beyond your degree title
Don’t just stick to roles that directly match your course name. Some of the most rewarding roles are a little more niche, and might suit you even better.
-
Apply for what interests you most
Focus on the role that aligns best with your goals, passions and career aspirations. You can use the application form to mention any other roles you’re also interested in.
-
Take inspiration from others
Our graduate case studies and employer insights are a great way to see where this journey can take you, and what it might look like along the way.
CV Writing Tips
Your CV is often the first thing we see — so make it count. Here’s how to keep it clear, concise and professional:
-
Keep it short and sweet
Aim for no more than 2 pages — that’s more than enough at graduate level.
-
Use a template
There’s no need to start from scratch. Professional CV templates are widely available online and using one is absolutely fine.
-
Bullet points work best
For each job or experience, list 3–5 key skills or achievements in short, punchy bullet points.
-
Provide Module/Work information
Our industry sponsors are looking for specific technical skills and experience. Give yourself the best chance of progressing through the recruitment process by detailing these clearly on your application.
-
Avoid unnecessary personal details
There’s no need to include a photo, your marital status, full address, or date of birth. A general location (e.g. Manchester, Cumbria, etc.) is perfectly fine.
Answering Application Questions
This is your chance to show us who you are — in your own words.
-
Be careful with AI tools
It’s fine to use AI to summarise research or tidy up your grammar. But avoid using it to fully write your answers — we want to hear your voice, not ChatGPT’s. And yes, it’s usually pretty obvious when answers have been written by AI!
-
Double check everything
Make sure your contact details are correct and that there are no spelling errors. A single typo in your email address or degree subject could result in a missed opportunity.
-
Be honest
If you say you can drive and end up placed on a site that can only be accessed by car… well, you’ll need to be able to drive! Being honest helps us find the right fit for you, and helps you avoid awkward situations later on.
We know applying for graduate schemes can feel daunting — but we’re not here to catch you out. We want to get to know the real you: your interests, your ambitions, your potential. So take your time, read through the guidance, and give it your best shot.
